If the weight indicator is powered off for an extended period, will the buffer battery discharge and result in the loss of calibration data and batch constants?

Why does the weight indicator display an incorrect value when I load a known weight?

This is the most common failure scenario in weighing systems and may be caused by Calibration Error or Mechanical failure Cause.

  • Load multiple weights that are proportional to each other, and check. Is the error constant?

    For example: If you load 50 kilograms onto the scale and the indicator shows 55 kilograms, try first unloading 100 kilograms and then loading 200 kilograms.
    If the error remains proportional—i.e., the indicator reads 110 kg, and 200 kg corresponds to 220 kg—this indicates that the system has no mechanical faults.

    In this case, simply recalibrate according to the steps in the manual.

Mechanical reasons : You may have reversed the load direction of the load cell.
Solution : Check the load direction to determine the operating direction of the load cell. You can indicate this with an arrow on the load cell.

Which provisions of Directive 2014/32/EU, or the Measuring Instruments Directive (MID), does the Automatic Weighing Instrument (AWI) comply with?

An automatic weighing instrument is a device that determines product quality without operator intervention.
Its defining characteristic is adherence to a pre-set automated procedure.

For commercial use, such instruments must comply with the requirements set out in Directive 2014/32/EU, in particular:

  • Basic requirements of Annex I;
  • Specific requirements for Annex VIII (MI-006).

LAUMAS provides weight indicators that comply with the directive ( W Series ) and weight launcher ( TLB and TLB4 ), and obtain “MID transmitter” certification for the gravity loading device (TLB4 is also suitable for weight capture devices). To form a complete MID-certified weighing system, the weighing transmitter must be connected to other equipment, and the entire assembly must also undergo certification.

The following is a list of the principal automatic weighing instruments that must comply with the requirements and recommendations of the OIML (International Organization of Legal Metrology):

  • Kechiwei – OIML R 51
    An automatic instrument used to determine the mass of discrete loads—i.e., loads composed of indivisible units such as packages—or of a single batch of bulk material.
  • Weight Control Batch Dividers – OIML R 51
    A weight-separating device that partitions objects of varying masses into one or more subsets based on the difference between their mass and the target value you wish to achieve.

    A heavy-duty weighing device used to label the weight of individual items.

     
  • Weight/Price Labeler – OIML R 51
    An automated device used to label individual items with weight and price information.
  • Gravity Adding Machine – OIML R 61
    An automated instrument used to fill containers with a predetermined and nearly constant bulk product mass.
  • Non-continuous totalizers (hopper totalizers) – OIML R 107
    An automated instrument that determines the mass of bulk products by dividing them into discrete loads.
    The mass of each discrete load is determined sequentially and summed. Each discrete load is then added to the heap.
  • Continuous Totalizers – OIML R 50
    An automated instrument for determining the mass of bulk products placed on a conveyor belt, without requiring systematic subdivision of the product and without interrupting the belt’s motion.
     
  • Railway Vehicle Weighbridges – OIML R 106
    An automated instrument equipped with a load receiver (including tracks) for weighing vehicles. Track clear.

Where can I have my NAWI weighing instrument subjected to conformity assessment (initial verification) or periodic inspection?

In accordance with Directive 2014/31/EU, we can perform the preliminary verification of LAUMAS weighing instruments for NAWI (CE-M) on-site at the headquarters and within the support center network.
Under this Directive, a conformity assessment shall be carried out if the weighing system is intended for use in lawful commercial activities or for medical, pharmaceutical, judicial, or sanctions-related purposes (see Question 21 of the Frequently Asked Questions).

Subsequent verification (periodic verification) shall be conducted in consultation with the local accreditation body.
In Italy, periodic inspections are conducted every three years from the date of the conformity assessment, whereas in other EU member states the inspection frequency is determined by national legislation.

Which weighing systems (or trade-legal systems) comply with the NAWI 2014/31/EU standard?

A non-automatic weighing instrument (NAWI) is an instrument that requires operator intervention during the weighing process.

European Directive 2014/31/EU requires that the following categories of applications use non-automatic weighing instruments that comply with this Directive:

  • Commercial transactions;
  • Calculate tolls, customs duties, taxes, insurance premiums, fines, remuneration, allowances, or similar charges;
  • Applicability as prescribed by laws, regulations, or legal opinions;
  • Monitoring, diagnosis, and nursing care in medical practice;
  • Preparation of prescription drugs in pharmacies and testing in medical and pharmaceutical laboratories;
  • Determination of prices for direct sales to the public and pricing of prepackaged products.

Prior to being put into use, lawful trade instruments must undergo compliance assessments and other periodic inspections.
Italy conducts inspections every three years, whereas the frequency of inspections in other EU member states is determined by national legislation.

My company is ISO 9001 certified, and I use a weighing instrument in the production process. How should I manage it in accordance with the standard?

Under these circumstances, weighing instruments must be inspected regularly in accordance with the company’s maintenance schedule to ensure the accuracy and reliability of measurement results and to maintain metrological traceability when required.

If the instrument plays a critical role in the company’s production process and is used frequently, inspections may be conducted monthly or every six months.

On the other hand, if the instrument is used in edge-of-line applications and at low frequency, the inspection interval may be extended, for example to once every 24 to 36 months.

Verification is performed using calibration weights traceable to national or international standards.

What is the operating principle of a load sensor?

A strain-gauge load cell consists of a metal housing—typically made of stainless steel or aluminum—onto which the strain gauges are mounted. Each strain gauge comprises a fine metallic wire (constantan) supported on an insulating substrate and bonded to a specific area of the load cell. As the surface of the load cell deforms in response to the applied load, the strain gauges elongate and contract; these dimensional changes induce corresponding variations in electrical resistance. The resistance changes are then measured via a Wheatstone bridge circuit and converted into a proportional electrical signal, usually expressed in millivolts (one thousandth of a volt).

What is a load cell?

A load cell (or force sensor) is an electronic component used to measure weight or force.

The force applied to the load cell is measured by detecting its mechanical deformation, which is expressed in units of one-tenth of a millimeter. The load cell then converts this deformation into an mV/V electrical signal that is proportional to the deformation.

Do you have UL-certified load cells?

No, because load cells do not require UL certification.

UL regulations govern the safety of electronic equipment. This marking indicates that the device has been tested to ensure that users will not suffer electric shock or electrocution.

However, UL considers load sensors to be ultra-low-voltage devices (below 50 V AC or 75 V DC) with extremely low current levels, so the risk of electric shock is effectively nonexistent.

What are the differences between 4-wire and 6-wire load cells? What aspects should be considered during installation?

Six-wire load cells have two additional wires, referred to as “sense lines” (Sense+ and Sense–), which are used to measure and compensate for the actual voltage reaching the load cell.

Thanks to the reference circuit, a six-wire load cell can compensate for voltage drops—such as those caused by temperature variations or cable length—without affecting weight measurement.
Therefore, if necessary, their cables can be shortened without damaging the load cell; however, it should be noted that modifying the original product will void the warranty.

In contrast, four-wire load cells are calibrated and thermally compensated based on their standard wiring length.

This is why we strongly advise against shortening the cable: it may compromise the reliability of calibration and compensation.
If feasible, cable conduits should be installed separately and routed as far as possible from power cables.
In addition, to minimize voltage drop in the cable section between the junction box and the weight indicator, it is recommended to use shielded cable with a larger cross-sectional area (at least 1 square millimeter).

Are LAUMAS load cells compatible with instruments of any brand, and vice versa?

Yes, all of our load cells are compatible with weight indicators and transmitters from any manufacturer, provided these devices support mV/V inputs for strain-gauge sensors. Conversely, all of our weight indicators are compatible with strain-gauge load cells from any manufacturer.

Where can I calibrate my load sensor?

You may submit a calibration request for your load cell directly to our accredited calibration laboratory, LAT No. 02141. We provide certified compression and tension calibration for load cells with capacities ranging from 1,000 kg to 10 kg, whether or not they are equipped with associated instrumentation. We also issue calibration reports that include linearity tests as well as linearity and repeatability tests.
The tests are conducted under tensile (up to 60,000 kg) and compressive (up to 500,000 kg) loads using LAUMAS load cells to verify instrument connectivity. If you require a certified calibration certificate or calibration report, please request the relevant documentation.

How do I check whether the load cell is functioning properly?

When a load cell is connected to a multi-channel weight transmitter or an intelligent junction box with built-in diagnostic functions, any faults in the load cell will be directly signaled by the instrument (see also “How to Verify the Proper Operation of a Load Cell—Built-In Diagnostics”).

Is there software available to configure and manage LAUMAS electronic instruments from a PC?

Yes, almost all LAUMAS weight indicators and weight transmitters can be managed from a PC using the free Instrument Manager software.

This software enables us to configure parameters, perform monitoring, conduct real-world calibration, and update the instrument.

How can a LAUMAS weight transmitter be integrated into a PLC via a fieldbus?

Is it possible to calibrate the instrument without a sample weight?

Yes, all W-series weight indicators and LAUMAS weight transmitters feature a built-in calibration procedure that can be completed by simply entering the load cell parameters in the instrument’s menu.

Is it possible to view the weight measured by the load cell system on two different instruments?

Yes, use W Series Weight indicator: you can view the weight on two separate displays and manage the weighing system from two different locations using the serial-port weight-read mode.

Simply connect one of the two weight indicators to the load cell, then transmit the measured weight to the other weight indicator via the RS232 or RS485 port.
In this way, the second weight indicator becomes independent, as if it were also directly connected to the load-cell system.

What advantages do LAUMAS weight indicators, when used in conjunction with MULTI (multi-program) software, offer to distributors and installers?

With the MULTI program, weight indicators allow installers to independently select the desired software type to meet a variety of application requirements.

Therefore, distributors that determine such inventory metrics will possess “variable” tools capable of adapting to diverse supply demands.

Which programs can be activated on the W-series weighing indicator?

You can choose from the following programs:

BASE: A program used to manage setpoints and does not have any specific batching functions.

LOAD: Single-product batching program, containing 99 recipes.

UNLOAD: Single-product unloading and batching program, containing 99 recipes.

3/6/14 Products: Supports loading and batching programs for up to 3, 6, or 14 products, with 99 recipes.

RIP: A serial remote display program with setpoint functionality, but without any batching capabilities.
